The Kris Style

A Marriage of Precision and Artistry

The Franz Haas winery, which produces Kris, is located in the Alto Adige province of Northeast Italy. Alto Adige has a rich past, belonging to various political regimes at different points in time. This history has yielded a blend of Germanic influences and Italian styles, which can be seen in the region’s culture, architecture, and lifestyle. It is here among the breathtaking Dolomites Mountains that modern German technology complements traditional Italian artistry in the final blending, refining, and bottling of Kris.

Franz Haas both personally and professionally embodies the mélange of Mediterranean and Bavarian influences that typify Alto Adige. Combining expertise in art, science, and agriculture, Franz is the seventh-generation in a family of Alto Adige winemakers dating back to 1880. While grounded in traditional Italian artisan winemaking methods, Franz has applied his formal economics education in Austria and oenological education in Germany to modernize the Franz Haas Winery – implementing new technologies to produce wines of unparalleled quality and consistency. On the blending bench, Franz turns to his artistic intuition where he applies his refined senses – smell, taste, and sight – to determine the ultimate character of the wine. This unique combination of technology and artistry yields ultra-focused expressive wines – affording Franz the prestigious Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri award for six consecutive years.

Franz’s wife and partner, Maria Luisa Manna, assists in the tasting and blending process. Her passion for art and culture resonates in Kris’ lively, expressive packaging. Their combined personalities and skills result in Kris – a wine that is precise in quality and consistency, and artistic in expression and package.
